About the Artwork +
This beautiful Madhubani painting by Priti Karn represents the age-old tradition of a bride’s ceremonial departure, symbolized by the “Doli Kahar” or the bride in a palanquin. The intricate artwork captures two palanquin bearers on either side, depicted with striking expressions and adorned in vibrant, colorful attire. Their detailed costumes showcase fine patterns of red, yellow, green, and blue, reflecting the artist’s mastery over traditional Madhubani art. The central focus of the painting is the bride seated inside an exquisitely designed palanquin, which is embellished with geometric and floral motifs in shades of red, blue, and orange. The bride is portrayed in a graceful pose, holding a symbolic flower, wearing traditional bridal attire and ornaments, evoking the essence of festivity and emotional departure. Surrounding the scene are lush trees laden with fruits, symbolizing prosperity and fertility, with the leaves finely detailed in contrasting shades of green. The intricate borders of the painting are a visual treat, showcasing repeating triangular and floral patterns in bold colors, adding to the rhythmic symmetry characteristic of Madhubani art. This painting not only depicts a cultural narrative of Indian weddings but also highlights themes of community, celebration, and emotional bonds. The use of natural dyes and fine brush strokes pays homage to the rural artistry of Bihar, where Madhubani art originated. Each element, from the expressions of the characters to the elaborate patterns, conveys a sense of joy, tradition, and timeless beauty, making it a captivating representation of heritage and storytelling through art.
