About the Artwork +
This Madhubani artwork by Ambika Devi, painted using bold black stokes with hints of red, depicts large circular flowers which represent fertility, growth and vitality of nature as well as the eternal circle of birth and death. They inherit sacred qualities and represent natures life and nurturing force by way of the tree giving large flowers. Circular flowers like Marigold are often given for offering by the people of the Mithila region in Bihar, from where the Madhubani art originates and also symbolizes worship and the presence of worship. These circular flowers are also worn as adornments by women. The presence of birds in the painting also symbolizes the celebration of life and are a proof of the existence of a rich, well-balanced nature. Birds also connote the presence of spirituality as birds are believed to be the messengers of God as they soar high to communicate with divine powers. Almost, monochromatic with little splashes of red, the painting portrays unity and balance not only in nature but in the picture as well. The colour red is also symbolic to the celebration of love, life, and passion. On one hand the root of the trees and the birds grounded near the bark of tree and on another hand the branches of the tree reaching out to heaving as well as the birds perched on the branches of the tree, signify the connection between Earth and sky.
