About the Artwork +
For these paintings, the pricing includes the teak wood frame.
Raja Ravi Varma’s oleograph illustrating the birth of Shakuntala is a vibrant and evocative portrayal set against a lush and rich landscape. The scene is dominated by a serene lake filled with blooming lotuses and gliding swans, creating a tranquil and picturesque background. Surrounding the lake are dense forests and rugged stones, enhancing the natural beauty and serenity of the setting.
In the foreground, the beautiful apsara Menaka is depicted, draped in a pristine white saree with golden borders. She holds the newborn Shakuntala tenderly in her arms and moves towards Sage Vishwamitra, who stands with an air of stern resolve and denial. Vishwamitra’s body language clearly shows his refusal to acknowledge or accept the child, his face turned away and his hand raised in a gesture of rejection.
The composition captures the dramatic moment of confrontation and emotion, with Menaka’s grace contrasting sharply with Vishwamitra’s austere demeanor. The detailed and delicate rendering of the characters and the surrounding landscape highlights Raja Ravi Varma’s exceptional skill in bringing mythological scenes to life with emotional depth and visual splendor.
This is a limited edition capsule collection of original oleographs/ chromo lithographs from the 1920's and 1930's created at the original Raja Ravi Verma Printing Press. This collection of paintings was originally made by Raja Ravi Verma and artists like CS Ramanujam. The oleographs are embellished with original delicate Japanese paper silk and Zari work in real gold and silver which was done by artists in the same period. These oleopgraphs were created in limited numbers and thus each artwork is limited to only 1 in availability with us. Varma used oleographs on paper, a type of lithography that uses oil paints on paper to make his work available to the masses. He eventually sold the press to one of the Germans. The stone-printing procedure allows exact brushstrokes and patterns to be replicated on a large scale with multitudes of tones and diverse colour palette. The artist signature is on each of the artworks and each artwork will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from MeMeraki.
