About the Artwork +
Bhaskar Chitrakar's contemporary Kalighat painting presents a captivating fusion of cultural symbols, with the bibi depicted as the Statue of Liberty donning traditional Bengali attire and holding an educational slate inscribed with Bengali alphabets. This innovative portrayal holds significant meaning, symbolizing the intersection of Bengali identity, education, and the ideals of freedom and enlightenment embodied by the Statue of Liberty. The vibrant colors and meticulous details in the painting capture the viewer's attention, inviting them to explore the layers of symbolism embedded within the artwork.
Chitrakar's artistic interpretation offers a unique perspective on contemporary Bengali society, highlighting the importance of education and cultural heritage in shaping identity and aspirations. The meticulous details in the painting, from the intricate patterns of the Bengali clothing to the precise rendering of the educational slate, reflect the artist's skill and dedication to his craft. Kalighat art originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, where it emerged as a popular form of visual expression among local artists and craftsmen. Artists would create vibrant compositions on paper using natural pigments and brushes, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, religious rituals, and everyday life. Through their art, Kalighat artists captured the essence of Bengali culture, reflecting the region's rich history and traditions while adapting to the changing times.
