About the Artwork +
Bhaskar Chitrakar's contemporary Babu Bibi Kalighat painting presents a captivating scene of a woman with her beloved dog, offering a modern twist on traditional themes of domestic life. The significance of this portrayal lies in its reflection of the bond between humans and animals, portraying companionship and affection in a vibrant and eye-catching manner. In this artwork, the meticulous details bring the scene to life, from the intricate patterns adorning the woman's attire to the expressive features of the dog. Each element contributes to the narrative of contemporary life, where pets are often considered cherished members of the family.
This contemporary take on Kalighat painting showcases the evolution of the art form from its traditional roots to embrace new subjects and themes relevant to modern society. Kalighat painting originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and everyday life. Over time, it transitioned from being a form of devotional art to a means of social commentary, reflecting the changing dynamics of Indian society. The process of creating Kalighat paintings involves fine brushwork and the use of natural pigments, with artists meticulously crafting each composition on paper or cloth. Today, artists like Bhaskar Chitrakar continue to breathe new life into the Kalighat tradition, offering contemporary interpretations that resonate with audiences around the world.
