About the Artwork +
The depiction of an elephant in Mahbubani Painting by artist Ambika Devi is an admiration of the elephant’s strength, power and beauty. Intricately painted, using bold strokes of black, the elephants are associated in harmony with the nature. Its presence in the forest and the flowers drawn on its body in the painting symbolize the elephant’s interconnectedness with nature and also signify a spiritual connectedness to the divine, and auspiciousness. The painting of the elephant in the forest celebrates the local diversity of animals, flora and fauna in the Mithila region of Bihar from where the Madhubani paintings originate. Elephants are seen as the guardian and protector of the forest and the local ecosystems ensuring the balance and well-being of the forests and the animals inhabiting in it. In the Hindu Mythology, Elephants are connected to Lord Ganesh, and the painting of the elephant also invokes spiritual connection and worship towards Lord Ganesh. Historically too, elephants have played an important role in Mithila where elephants were synonymous to royalty symbolizing the authority and power of the rulers in ancient times. The viewer notices very little empty white spaces in the paintings, as the intricate geometric patterns drawn in Madhubani paintings using bright and vibrant colours sourced from natural plant pigments symbolizes an abundance of fertility and generosity highlighting a flourishing, energetic and holistic world full of possibilities. The absence of empty white spaces indicates that every element of the painting symbolizes a significant message, and the artwork is well balanced and all-encompassing leaving not gaps in the narrative. The dominant green colour in this painting also contributes to the symbolism of depicting harmony with nature and growth, while the bright red hues symbolize protection and warding off evil.
