About the Artwork +
This Warli painting by Dilip Bahotha depicts an immersive scene of a fisherman engaging in the art of fishing along a river. The painting focuses on the fisherman's skillful use of his Fishing Net, known as Paagir. Fishing holds immense significance for the Warli community, providing sustenance and livelihood. The painting captures the enthusiasm and dedication with which the community partakes in this activity. Within the Warli culture, fishing is accompanied by a guiding principle: to take only what is necessary from the bounties of nature. Giraah, the deity, and protector of the seas, is revered and respected, emphasizing the Warli belief in avoiding greed and maintaining a balanced approach to their share of the catch. Through this painting, Dilip Bahotha offers a glimpse into the interconnectedness between the Warli people and the rivers that sustain them. It serves as a poignant reminder of the community's deep respect for nature's resources and their harmonious coexistence with the world around them.
