About the Artwork +
Madhubani paintings are largely inspired by the Hindu Mythology. This particular painting by Ambika Devi is a portrait of the divine feminine energy, Goddess Shakti, who embodies power, strength and creative energy. The snake around Goddess Shakti's neck symbolizes her control over primal life forces and her ability to transcend Earthly limitations, while the trident in her hand is a destroyer of negativity and protects the devotees. Such portraits of Gods and Goddesses are usually placed in houses and temples and are worshipped by the devotees. While the presence of the snake and trident in the artwork adds to the mystical and spiritual element of the artwork, even the use of the yellow colour in the background symbolises divinity and celestial realms and is often used to depict Gods and Goddesses in Madhubani paintings. The yellow in the background in contrast to the vibrant colours used to paint Goddess Shakti, adds harmony and balance to the painting. Goddess Shakti is worshipped as the Goddess of fertility, power, and the creator of the universe. The Madhubani paintings originating from Bihar, which is largely an agrarian state, often depicts Goddess Shakti as the people from the Mithila region pray to Goddess Shakti for abundance of harvests and prosperity. She is known as a motherly loving and caring figure who removes all obstacles from the devotee’s life and liberates the devotee from world suffering, aiding his/her spiritual growth.
