About the Artwork +
The majestic but elegant peacocks perched on the branches, painted by the Madhubani artist, Ambika Devi signify royalty, dignity, spirituality, and grace as peacocks are associated with higher spiritual realm. Depicting peacocks eating the fruits, perched on the branches highlights the significance of the interconnectedness of humans, the animal kingdom, and the plant kingdom, as none of them can survive without the other. The fruits also symbolize the continuation and sustenance of life as the roots of the tree represent the past, the trunk represents the present while the branches represent the future. This painting encapsulates the dependence of different life forms on nature and their personal growth and development through the passage of time. The bright orange fruits symbolize nourishment and prosperity and show the rich nature of the surrounding environment. Painted using natural colours sourced from indigo, charcoal and various other flowers and plants, such intricate Mahbubani artforms are often inspired by local rituals and stories from the Mithila region as the peacock is also a divine being representing both Goddess Sarasvati and Lord Krishna as well as a being of the higher spiritual realm. The use of bold strokes as well as the peacocks, a species known for their elegance and grandeur gives the painting a striking and sublime feel at first glance.
