About the Artwork +
The Beautiful Kerala Mural Art by the great artist Jijulal captures the iconic "Kaliya Mardhana". It vividly depicts the mythical episode of Lord Krishna subduing the venomous serpent, Kaliya.
Central to the composition is Krishna, rendered in striking hues of emerald green, symbolizing divinity and vibrancy. His demeanor is calm yet authoritative as he effortlessly dances atop Kaliya’s coiled, multi-headed form, which emerges menacingly from the swirling blue waters below. Krishna is adorned in traditional attire, marked by intricately detailed garments and ornate jewelry, showcasing the artist’s meticulous attention to the elaborate ornamentation typical of classical Indian art. His posture is dynamic and fluid, capturing the divine elegance and strength inherent in the narrative.
The serpentine forms of Kaliya are rendered in a sinuous, almost hypnotic pattern, with scales meticulously illustrated to emphasize the creature’s formidable presence. The backdrop transitions from the vibrant blues of the water to a warm, radiant gold, creating a heavenly aura around Krishna, emphasizing his divine nature. The surrounding lotus flowers and rippling waves lend a naturalistic charm to the scene, harmonizing the divine encounter with the serene beauty of nature.
Jijulal’s mural not only narrates a powerful legend but also celebrates the intricate artistry and spiritual fervor integral to Kerala’s mural traditions. The vibrant palette, intricate details, and expressive dynamism make this piece a captivating blend of mythology and artistry.
