About the Artwork +
This vibrant Kalamkari artwork by Harinath N beautifully portrays the Shiv Parivar, featuring Lord Shiva, Parvati Devi, and their children, Lord Karthikeya and Lord Ganesha, along with the sacred bull, Nandi. The scene is brought to life with the intricate detailing and rich colors characteristic of Kalamkari art, which combines mythology with meticulous artistry.
Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer in the Hindu trinity, sits with his characteristic attributes, emanating a serene yet powerful presence. His headgear, the jatamoot adorned with the Ganga river and the crescent moon, accentuates his divine aura. The third eye on his forehead, snakes, and rudraksh mala further emphasize his godly nature. Shiva’s multiple arms hold a deer and mridang in the upper hands, while one hand holds Parvati, and another is raised in the Abhay mudra, offering protection and reassurance.
Beside him, Parvati Devi, the goddess of fertility, love, and devotion, is depicted with grace and poise, symbolizing tranquility and beauty. She gently holds Child Ganesh with his elephant head in one hand, while the other hand is poised in the Abhay mudra. Lord Kartikeya, seated on Shiva's lap, and Ganesh, seated on Parvati's lap, both share the same gesture of reassurance, adding to the familial and protective atmosphere of the composition.
At the base of the scene, Nandi, Lord Shiva's mount and gatekeeper, exudes a calm and vigilant demeanor, anchoring the divine assembly with his presence. The entire composition is framed with intricate borders and patterns, filled with vibrant colors and delicate motifs. These elements, characteristic of Kalamkari, enhance the overall aesthetic appeal and intricately link the artwork to its cultural and religious roots.
