Raja Ravi Varma is an artist, renowned for his mastery of blending traditional Indian art with European techniques. In this oleograph, he has depicted the story of Madalasa Ritudhwaj, one of the most celebrated love stories from ancient Indian mythology. Against a backdrop of lush landscapes and ethereal skies, the central figures of Madalasa and Ritudhwaj stand as embodiments of beauty, grace, and undying love. The scene unfolds with the virtuous king Ritudhwaj's marriage proposal to Madalasa, who is described as the most ideal and learned woman in the Markendeya Purana. Standing against a tree, with his gaze locked on the coy smile of his lady love, waiting for her response to his proposal. This scene portrays the rare moment where the heroine is keenly pondering over the hero's proposal before accepting it. Her reluctance is visible in her shy posture. She is neither facing the hero, nor the viewer, indicating her desire for solitude while she contemplates. Raja Ravi Varma has captured the tender emotions and longing that define their relationship, portraying their love as pure and transcendent.
The protagonists in the oleograph are adorned in opulent attire with attention to their vibrant primary color palette like red, yellow, and green. The garments made of Japanese silk and real gold and silver Zari embellishments evident in the oleographs enhance the aesthetic, and provide a three-dimensional effect. Overall, by the masterful use of light and shadow in this oleograph, Raja Ravi Varma creates a sense of drama and grandeur, heightening the emotional impact of the narrative.
This is a limited edition capsule collection of original oleographs/ chromo lithographs from the 1920's and 1930's created at the original Raja Ravi Verma Printing Press. This collection of paintings was originally made by Raja Ravi Verma and artists like CS Ramanujam. The oleographs are embellished with original delicate Japanese paper silk and Zari work in real gold and silver which was done by artists in the same period. These oleopgraphs were created in limited numbers and thus each artwork is limited to only 1 in availability with us. Varma used oleographs on paper, a type of lithography that uses oil paints on paper to make his work available to the masses. He eventually sold the press to one of the Germans. The stone-printing procedure allows exact brushstrokes and patterns to be replicated on a large scale with multitudes of tones and diverse colour palette. The artist signature is on each of the artworks and each artwork will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from MeMeraki.
