About the Artwork +
This captivating Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar features the powerful and divine scene of Maa Durga defeating the Asura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. At the center of the composition, Maa Durga is depicted in her multi-armed form, each arm holding a weapon or divine symbol, signifying her supreme power and control over various forces of the universe. Her face exudes calm confidence, and she sits regally, poised for battle, atop a lion, her traditional vahan (vehicle), which adds to the symbolism of strength and courage. The Asura, with his dark skin and defeated posture, lies beneath her, emphasizing the victory of righteousness. Surrounding Maa Durga are her two sons, Lord Ganesha and Lord Karthikeya, along with her daughters, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi, all placed gracefully within the scene. Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is seen with his elephant head and his tiny vahan, the mouse, beside him, while Lord Karthikeya, the god of war, stands in his warrior form, holding his spear, with his majestic peacock by his side. Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom and learning, is elegantly poised with her veena, and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, stands adorned in fine attire, holding a lotus, representing wealth and purity. The figures are intricately detailed with vivid colours and elaborate patterns, typical of the Kalighat style, making the painting a vibrant depiction of divine power, grace, and familial unity, with each deity symbolizing an aspect of cosmic order.
