About the Artwork +
This traditional monochromatic Madhubani art by Ambika Devi is a tribute to the ancient form of Madhubani paintings where primarily women artists created black ink using soot and natural binders. Taking the viewer away from multiple, bright vibrant colours, this painting focusses solely on the intricate geometric patterns and designs so innately characteristic of Madhubani paintings. Use of the colour black also signifies strength, protection, grounding, knowledge, and wisdom. In Madhubani paintings, as peacocks symbolize grace and beauty, drawing a peacock in monochrome highlights its graceful and slender figure. The well-defined black ink on white paper contrast highlights the peacocks intricate form as the focal point of the painting, add dept and drama to the picture. Subtle but definitive, the monochromatic trees on which the peacocks are perched also signify rootedness, strength, and endurance. The monochrome trees also signify the interconnectedness of nature and human beings and highlight the importance of preserving nature, as the use of black colour helps the viewer focus on each element including the trees separately. The black colour used throughout the painting, highlights every element of the painting as well as bringing forth the complex geometric patterns drawn within each element, explicitly bringing forth every element’s symbolism. The black ink used also stands out bringing harmony and balance to the entire painting. In recent times, various artists have experimented with drawing monochrome trees to signify simplicity and balance, depicting traditional elements of Madhubani art in monochrome.
