About the Artwork +
In Bhaskar Chitrakar's innovative fusion of religious and Babu Biwi Kalighat painting styles, a captivating scene unfolds as a Babu, depicted selling "puchka" (পুচকা) from a street cart, is visited by the revered deity Lord Shiva. The significance of this portrayal lies in its juxtaposition of the mundane and the divine, as everyday life intersects with religious mythology. The vibrant colors and dynamic composition draw the viewer's attention, while the meticulous details bring the scene to life with a sense of energy and vitality. The Babu's street cart, adorned with colorful banners and overflowing with delicious snacks, stands in stark contrast to the presence of Lord Shiva, who is depicted with reverence and awe.
Chitrakar's contemporary take on the Kalighat style breathes new life into the genre, pushing the boundaries of traditional themes and subject matter. By blending elements of religious iconography with everyday scenes of Babu Biwi life, the artist invites viewers to contemplate the intersection of the sacred and the profane in contemporary society. Kalighat art, originating in the 19th century around the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, emerged as a popular form of visual expression among local artists. The process involved using natural pigments and brushes to create vibrant compositions on paper, often depicting scenes from everyday life, religious themes, and social commentary. Through their art, Kalighat artists provided a window into the complexities of Bengali culture and society, capturing the essence of daily life with humor, wit, and compassion.
