About the Artwork +
Symbolically spiritual, this Madhubani artwork by Ambika Devi, depicts large birds perched on a tree with purple colour flowers. With birds in Madhubani being messengers of freedom, joy and spirituality and the colour purple representing spirituality, transformation and mysticism, this artwork acts as a medium of connection between the people of Mithila and the divine. Birds are worshipped by the people of the Mithila region in Bihar where the Madhubani paintings originate, as the birds can soar high and communicate the wishes of the people to God and are revered as people of Mithila through their worship of the birds pay their respect and gratitude to the bountiful gifts of nature. Being part of an agrarian region, the people of Mithila are dependent on sustaining their agriculture and wish for bountiful harvests every year. Worshiping the birds and thanking the nature for supporting the people of Mithila, is the way of the community to thank nature, though the people of Mithila also make sure that they live in harmony with nature and do not harm their environment. This is why one often finds nature themed Madhubani paintings with bright vibrant colours sourced from natural pigments derived from plants. The centrality of the tree in the picture conveys that it is the Tree of life, which is full of life energies, representing spiritual wisdom and enlightenment as its roots are grounded but its branches reach out to heaven. The birds on the tree represent the interconnectedness and harmony of the different elements of nature and the tree also symbolizes the eternal circle of birth, growth, death, and regrowth as well as fertility and abundance. Full of vibrant colours and bold strokes, this Madhubani art is a celebration of life energies and the harmonious existence of different life forms in nature.
