About the Artwork +
This painting by Ambika devi portrays baby Krishna in a cradel with his three mother figures, them being his Earthly mother Yashoda with two other feminine figures showcasing the nurturing and protective energies of the divine feminine. Celebrating motherly love and devotion, the women in the painting express deep love for baby Krishna who himself is the embodiement of love. This painting symbolizes the community care, love and support received when a child is raised and highlights the concept of shared responsibility in caring and protecting a child. The presence of Krishna in a cradle alsi highlights his divine status while the adoration and love poured over him symbolises the bountiful love poured over Krishna by all his devotees. The toys in the hands of the bother figures also highlight the innocent and playful nature of Krishna. The use of the colour red in this painting is also significant as red in Madhubani painting signifies auspiciousness, passion, love, protection, divine presence and well-being signifying the motherly love and protectoion bestowed Krishna. The scene in this picture takes place in a forest, signifying Krishna's peaceful co-existence with nature in peace. The forest also becomes a shield of protection and safe space for baby Krisha and his innocense to exist without any hindrance while being one wit the nature and its various life forms. Forests also represent the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Krishna in the middle of a forest may symbolize his eternal cycle of birth and death.
