About the Artwork +
Madhubani art piece called a Kohbar is significant in Hindu marital ceremonies in the Mithila region of Bihar, painted predominantly by women artists on the walls of the nuptial chamber where the newlywed couple spend their first night. 'Khobar' comes from the Maithili word, 'Khobar Ghar', that translates to the bridal chamber. Khobar paintings bring good luck, fertility, and prosperity to the newlywed couple. Flowers form the focal point of this particular Kohbar painting where flowers in a circle in Madhubani art signify fertility and abundance as it represents the blooming of nature, the vitality of life and abundance of prosperity. This intricate painting of the Kohbar incorporates many other elements traditionally associated with bringing luck and prosperity to a newlywed couple, like the snakes which will protect the couple from negativity and symbolises knowledge and wisdom, and the tortoise which imparts longevity, stability, endurance and groundedness to the couple. Symbolizing the sanctity and auspiciousness of the marital union, the intricate Kohbar paintings in nuptial chambers create a positive and joyous ambience for the couple bringing in harmony, prosperity and fertility in the couple's lives. Painted in bold strokes of black and shaded in different hues of red on white paper, even the colours symbolize good luch for the couple as the red colour stands for fertility, passion, and celebration while the black strokes imply stability, grounding, balance and transcendence and the white spaces in between represent purity, divinity, and the pursuit of spiritual truth.
