About the Artwork +
At the centre of this Madhubani painting by Ambika Devi is a flower representing growth, purity and the unfolding of the natural energy leading to enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and the blossoming of consciousness of human beings. Surrounding the flower are elephants signifying strength, wisdom, ability, and power while the birds signify freedom, spirituality, and the communication with the divine. The animals in a circular arrangement seem to be enclosed in a forest signifying the interconnectedness of different life forms in nature and the balance and wholeness achieved by the convergence of different abilities of strengths, power, freedom, and communication. The circular loops also represent the eternal circle of life and death and the harmony of the universe. Taking the entire picture together gives the viewer a sense of completeness and wholeness achieved by intricate arrangement of varied life forms of nature around a single flower. The use of bold black strokes with a sparse shading of bright red colour on white paper brings depth and dimension to the painting highlighting the intricate geometric patterns and shapes, creating a visually captivating experience. As farming helps sustain the local economy, the people of Mithila in Bihar from where the Madhubani paintings originate, worship nature, and strive to maintain an ecological balance between human beings and nature as they have lived sustainably through centuries depending on agriculture but respecting and preserving the nature. So one often sees this reverence in Madhubani paintings that portray nature as a pristine ecosystem where all life forms depend on each other and live in harmony with one another.
