About the Artwork +

In Saraswati Kannan's Kurumba painting, a lively village scene unfolds, echoing the intricate storytelling seen in Warli art. Within this captivating tableau, villagers engage in various daily tasks, from cultivating crops to fetching water, all while exuding the simplicity and interconnectedness cherished in rural life. Similar to Warli art, Kurumba paintings eloquently convey the harmonious relationship between humans, animals, and nature, portraying a tapestry of existence where each element is intertwined.

Originating from the Kurumba tribe in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, India, Kurumba art is a testament to the tribe's cultural heritage and storytelling traditions. Artists often utilize natural materials like charcoal and plant-based pigments to create intricate designs on various surfaces, ensuring the preservation of their ancestral narratives for future generations. In Kannan's depiction, the addition of villagers cooking food in pots further enhances the scene's authenticity, offering a glimpse into the daily rhythms and communal spirit of Kurumba village life.
