About the Artwork +

The Cheriyal mask crafted by Sai Kiran, portraying Ardhanarishwar, is a captivating blend of the masculine and feminine energies within Hindu mythology. Ardhanarishwar symbolizes the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, represented here with meticulous detail and symbolic color choices. Shiva's side of the face, characterized by a prominent moustache, third eye and a serene expression, exudes strength and tranquility. On the other side, Parvati's presence is marked by delicate features and adorned with a nose ring and bindi, representing her grace and nurturing nature as the Divine Mother. The contours and patterns, delineated by confident black lines, not only define the facial features but also emphasize the harmonious fusion of masculine and feminine aspects in Ardhanarishwar.

Traditionally, these masks are used during performances of folk theatre and storytelling, particularly in the region of Telangana, India. Cheriyal masks are crafted using a traditional mask-making technique that consists of an elaborate five-step process: molding, drying, decorating, smoothing, and painting. Generally, they are made from materials like wood, coconut shells, and sawdust, combined with tamarind seed paste to create a sturdy yet lightweight structure. Natural dyes and pigments are used to apply the vivid colors, which are often derived from minerals and plants. Overall, the Ardhanarishwar mask is not merely a decorative piece but a profound representation of Hindu mythology and spiritual beliefs, inviting viewers to contemplate the divine union and the complementary nature of male and female energies in the universe.

    Cheriyal Scroll

Cheriyal scrolls, resembling a living narrative akin to cinematic reels or comic strips, intricately weave tales sourced from the tapestry of Indian mythology. Painted in vibrant, predominantly primary hues, with fiery red backgrounds dominating, these artworks exude the unrestricted creative spirit of local artisans, unfettered by the shackles of formal academia. Spanning over four centuries, the cherished tradition of Cheriyal scroll painting is intrinsically woven into the storytelling legacy of its region. These narratives find their roots in the familiarity of ancient literary, mythological, and folk traditions. Unlike scroll paintings in other parts of Asia, which adorned the courts and noble abodes, India's scrolls were the province of wandering bards and village artists, deeply embedded in the rural fabric of life. Though once a prominent artistic expression across Andhra and neighboring regions, each infused with its unique flavors and local customs, Cheriyal scrolls have sought refuge in Cheriyal town, Telangana. Here, they stand as the last bastion, as the waves of modernity, in the form of television, cinema, and computers, steadily encircle this captivating tradition.
