About the Artwork +
This Warli Art by Dilip Bahotha depicts a Warli Village. In this painting, a huge landscape of nighttime in a traditional Warli Village comes to life. With a lot of huts surrounded by trees, the tribal people are illustrated doing their daily chores. Trees provide the Warli people with many practical benefits, such as shade, shelter, and food emphasizing the importance of the ecosystem and the interdependence of all living things. These Warli homes are not only shelters for humans because they love to live with nature, but they also keep their animals in the same house. It is a symbol of protective living that conforms to the invisible law of nature. There is a joyous occasion as in the center of the village, the tribal folks are tarpa dancing. Hand in hand, these silhouettes move in a circle along the narrow lanes of a village, hopping forward and backward dancing to the high-pitched tunes of a tarpa. They rely on the tarpakar — who stands at the center of a clearing with the performers around him. The circle formation of the dancers is also said to resemble the circle of life. Every night after a day's work, they gather at the village open space and dance through the night. For small clusters of agrarian communities and forest dwellers, it is a wordless expression of happiness and fulfillment.
