About the Artwork +
Bhaskar Chitrakar's contemporary Kalighat painting presents a heartwarming scene of marital harmony as the babu and bibi share a tender moment together. The bibi, seated at the piano, plays a melodious tune while her beloved babu gently places a rose in her hair. Their affection is palpable, further emphasized by the presence of their cat, a symbol of domestic bliss, perched on the piano. Each element in the painting, from the intricate details of the piano keys to the playful interaction between the couple and their pet, contributes to the vibrant and captivating ambiance of the scene.
Chitrakar's innovative approach to Kalighat painting breathes new life into the traditional art form, offering a contemporary perspective on marital relationships and domestic life. Through his meticulous attention to detail and vibrant color palette, he captures the essence of love, companionship, and harmony in modern-day Bengali households. This painting serves as a delightful reinterpretation of Kalighat art, showcasing the enduring relevance and adaptability of the genre in depicting everyday scenes and emotions. Kalighat painting originated in the 19th century in the vicinity of the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, India. Initially, these paintings depicted Hindu deities and mythological themes on cloth scrolls sold as souvenirs to temple visitors. Over time, the art form evolved to portray scenes from everyday life, capturing the essence of Bengali culture and society. The process involves using natural dyes and brushes made from animal hair to create intricate designs and vibrant colors on paper or cloth canvases, preserving the rich artistic heritage of the region for generations to come.
