About the Artwork +
In Bhaskar Chitrakar's contemporary interpretation of the Kalighat style, the powerful goddess Kali Maa takes center stage, depicted with striking intensity and dynamism. Standing amidst a backdrop of swirling flames, Kali Maa is portrayed in her fierce form, with a demon cowering at her feet and a mala of severed heads adorning her neck. The significance of this portrayal lies in its portrayal of the goddess's role as a destroyer of evil forces and protector of her devotees. The vibrant colors and bold lines draw the viewer's attention, while the meticulous details, such as the intricate patterns on Kali Maa's attire and the expression of triumph on her face, add depth and complexity to the composition.
Chitrakar's contemporary take on the Kalighat style breathes new life into the genre, offering a fresh perspective on traditional religious themes. By infusing the traditional Kalighat style with modern elements, the artist creates a visually captivating and thought-provoking artwork that resonates with viewers on multiple levels. Kalighat art originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, where it emerged as a popular form of visual expression among local artists and craftsmen. The process involved using natural pigments and brushes to create vibrant compositions on paper, often depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, religious rituals, and daily life. Through their art, Kalighat artists captured the essence of Bengali culture and spirituality, reflecting the rich tapestry of beliefs and traditions that define the region.
