About the Artwork +
This striking leather puppetry by Rajeev Pulavar brings to life the colossal figure of Kumbhakarna, the legendary giant from the Indian epic Ramayana, known for his immense strength and insatiable appetite. Crafted with impeccable attention to detail, Kumbhakarna is portrayed in a powerful stance, his towering frame dominating the scene. His dark complexion is accentuated by intricate white and gold perforations that outline his muscular limbs and robust form. The puppet captures the moment before battle, as Kumbhakarna appears ready to unleash his fury, with his broad shoulders hunched forward and his arms extended in readiness. He is adorned with rich jewelry, including thick bracelets and anklets, which shimmer with golden hues, contrasting against his dark skin. His green dhoti is intricately designed, dotted with floral patterns, and fastened with an elaborate golden belt, further emphasizing his royal heritage as Ravana’s mighty brother. The headpiece is particularly noteworthy, with its elaborate crest adorned with swirling designs, symbolizing his status as a giant warrior. His expressive face, with large, almond-shaped eyes and a thick, protruding nose, adds a touch of menace, while his slightly open mouth reveals his readiness for battle. The puppet’s craftsmanship highlights both the physical strength and the tragic nature of Kumbhakarna, whose immense loyalty to his brother Ravana ultimately led to his downfall. This masterpiece is a testament to the rich cultural tradition of leather puppetry, where legends and myths are vividly brought to life through intricate craftsmanship and storytelling.
