About the Artwork +

Lakshmi, also known as Shri is one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism. She is the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, beauty and prosperity, and associated with Maya ("Illusion"). Along with Parvati and Saraswati, she forms the Tridevi of Hindu goddesses. In Lakshmi's iconography, she is either sitting or standing on a lotus and typically carrying a lotus in one or two hands. It symbolises knowledge, self-realisation, and liberation in the Vedic context, and represents reality, consciousness, and karma ('work, deed') in the Tantra (Sahasrara) context. The lotus, a flower that blooms in clean or dirty water, also symbolises purity regardless of the good or bad circumstances in which it grows. It is a reminder that good and prosperity can bloom and not be affected by evil in one's surroundings.

About The Artist : An early interest in painting, Rajendra Sharma or Raju ji as we fondly call him, has been interested in art since the age of 10 and has now been a miniature artist for 25 years. A self taught who learnt the intricacies of miniature art on his own as he did not belong to a family of artists, his father was actually a legal draftsman. His dream is to popularise this art in all corners of the world so many more people can continue to learn and take this art forward.

About The Art : Indian Miniatures are small scaled, high detailed paintings. They trace back to the 9th century CE and are considered to be a living art pursued by many artists today. The painting style originated long before the invention of paper, which was produced in India in the 12th century CE. The paintings were created on manuscripts which were made from dried palm leaves or were painted on cloth. By the 12th century, free from restrictions of painting on palm leaf, Indian miniatures grew bigger in format. They began to include more intense colours and extensive border embellishments, with the influence of painting styles of Persia and Mamluks under the Ottomans. Miniature paintings began to break new ground in colour with golds, silvers, and a new ultramarine blue from lapis lazuli.Miniatures were heavily influenced by Indian literature and were often used as illustrations to texts, as well as individual paintings. Indian painters illustrated epics, fables and religious texts, visualising these stories through art for those who might not be able to read. From paintings of the Janamsakhis to illustrated biographies of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism; from Mughal empires to early-Modern India, miniature paintings have expressed and preserved the rich variety of Indian culture and history.

Miniature Paintings

Gracious strokes artfully done with a single haired brush, marks the detailing in the renowned Miniature paintings. The genesis of the Mughal miniature painting is said to be one of the pivotal points of visual history of India. An extravagant and striking fusion of the Indian style, whose roots that go back to the 6th and 7th Centuries BCE, and the Safavid style of the Persian school gave birth to the Mughal School of miniature painting. Under the patronage of Mughal emperors like Akbar and Jahangir, miniature art became the primary mode of historical archiving. The visual splendour of courtly scenes, historic wars, secret trysts of lovers, tales from mythology, and much more were captured in detail by the many schools of miniature painting throughout India. An intricacy so fine that the painting cannot be viewed alone with naked eyes and needs magnifying glass to view the details. The vibrancy of the paintings were brought out by natural colours from indigo, precious stones, shells, pearls, real gold and silver. Towards the end of the 18th century, Mughal miniatures started losing their sheen with the loss of genuine patrons for the delicate artform. Yet, till date the schools of miniature painting continue to pass the traditional skills on, with Rajasthan holding on strongly to the artistic legacy of the Mughal miniature paintings.
