About the Artwork +
In Uttam Chitrakar's rendition of Maa Durga in the Kalighat style, we witness a poignant moment captured with profound emotion and symbolism. Here, Maa Durga embodies her most furious form, Mahakali, her divine rage palpable as she stands atop her consort, lord Shiva. Yet, as her foot unintentionally touches Shiva, a wave of realization washes over her, softening her fierce countenance. This portrayal encapsulates the essence of Kalighat paintings, where mythological narratives are infused with human-like emotions. Maa Durga's transformation from fury to calmness speaks to the universal human experience of overcoming anger and finding inner peace through introspection and empathy.
In the Kalighat tradition, Mahakali holds profound significance as the embodiment of divine power and the ultimate destroyer of evil forces. Chitrakar's portrayal invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of human emotions and the transformative power of empathy and forgiveness, transcending the boundaries between the divine and the human realm. It is a testament to the enduring relevance and timeless beauty of Kalighat paintings, where myth and humanity converge in a captivating tableau of spiritual exploration.
Kalighat painting is a style of Indian artwork that originated in the 19th century in the vicinity of the Kali temple in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), hence the name "Kalighat." It flourished as a popular form of visual expression among the local residents, particularly the patuas or scroll painters, who depicted a wide range of subjects including mythological scenes, religious deities, daily life, social satire, and British colonial influences. Characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and expressive forms, Kalighat paintings often feature exaggerated figures with stylized features. Artists used natural dyes and materials like paper, cloth, and brushes made from animal hair. Initially, these paintings were produced as souvenirs for pilgrims visiting the Kali temple but later gained popularity as a form of mass-produced art for a wider audience. Despite its humble origins, Kalighat painting has since garnered international recognition for its unique style and cultural significance, reflecting the rich tapestry of Indian artistic heritage.
