About the Artwork +

Kanday Anjannappa's Tholu painting beautifully captures the divine presence of Lord Rama, accompanied by Sita, his brothers and the devoted Lord Hanuman. At the heart of the composition, Rama and Sita stand gracefully in the Abhay Mudra, a gesture of reassurance and protection, facing each other with serene expressions.

Encircling the central figures are Rama's brothers—Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna—each depicted with their bows and arrows, dressed in regal attire that signifies their royal status. At their feet, Lord Hanuman is portrayed in Anjali Mudra, a gesture of deep reverence and devotion, emphasizing his unwavering loyalty and dedication.

The entire scene is set against a backdrop of a sumptuous royal interior, featuring intricately decorated pillars and arches adorned with traditional motifs. Colorful silk draperies enhance the grandeur of the setting. The vibrant palette of the painting, dominated by rich golds, along with shades of red, yellow, and pink, adds to the opulence and sacredness of the scene.

Anjannappa's use of vivid colors not only highlights the divine and royal nature of the characters but also brings a sense of warmth and celebration to the painting. This Tholu artwork is a testament to the artist's skill in combining intricate details with a vibrant color scheme to create a composition that is both visually striking and spiritually profound.

Tholu Bommalata

Tholu is Telegu for leather, while Bommalu is Telegu for puppet dance. Tholu is claimed to have started during the reign of the Satavahana dynasty about 200 BCE. However, the oldest evidence for it dates back to the 15th century, under the reign of Krishnadeva Raya of the Vijayanagara kingdom. Tholu Bommalata preparation is intertwined with the region's shadow puppetry. In the region, there are two types of shadow puppetry: sutram bommalata and koyya bommalata. In 2008, the Government of India designated it as a Geographical Indication.
