About the Artwork +
This striking leather puppetry by Rajeev Pulavar portrays Lord Rama, the hero of the *Ramayana*, with remarkable artistry and vibrant colors. Rama’s deep blue complexion, a symbolic representation of his divine nature, stands out against the warm hues of his regal attire. His posture is composed, with one hand gracefully holding a staff, while his other arm rests calmly by his side, exuding both strength and serenity. The intricate detailing on his jewelry and clothing is stunning his golden crown, studded with delicate patterns, gleams atop his head, signifying his royal lineage as the prince of Ayodhya. His dhoti, a blend of reds and oranges, is adorned with intricate motifs and bordered with finely cut, perforated designs that emphasize the puppet’s three-dimensional texture. The curves of his muscular arms, clad in gold armbands and bracelets, reflect his warrior prowess. The detailed bow slung across his shoulder is a subtle reminder of his role as a protector and vanquisher of evil. Rama’s expression is calm yet determined, reflecting his steadfast commitment to justice and righteousness. The puppet’s skillful construction, from the fine perforations to the vivid use of colors, exemplifies the craftsmanship of Kerala’s traditional leather puppetry, with each detail breathing life into the character. Rajeev Pulavar has masterfully captured the essence of Lord Rama, blending mythological grandeur with artistic finesse, making this piece a celebration of devotion, tradition, and storytelling.
