About the Artwork +
In this breathtaking Pichwai painting of Lord Ram's Coronation, the scene is imbued with opulence and devotion as pure gold accents mingle with vibrant hues. Prabhu Sri Ram, the embodiment of kingship, is welcomed back to Ayodhya with reverence and celebration after his 14-year exile in the forest. The painting showcases the prominent characters of the Ramayana: Sita, Hanumanji, Laxman, and others, each depicted with intricate detail and reverence. The rich color palette, dominated by hues of red, creates a mesmerizing backdrop for the divine tableau. As viewers immerse themselves in the scene, they are taken on a journey through the epic Ramayana, witnessing the trials and triumphs of Lord Ram's life. From his righteous exile to his victorious return and coronation, every moment is captured in exquisite detail, inviting contemplation and reverence for the timeless tale of courage, devotion, and divine grace.
Pichwai painting, once cherished by ancient Indians and later by the Mughals, experienced a revival in the 16th century, evolving into a cherished art form practiced both in India and globally. The term "Pichhwai" derives from Sanskrit, signifying "back" and "hanging," reflecting its purpose. These intricate paintings predominantly portray the life of Shrinathji, the divine form of Lord Krishna holding the revered Govardhan hill. Vivid depictions of Lord Krishna's youthful escapades, accompanied by Gopikas, cows, and his melodious flute, adorn these murals on cloth, with the deity as their focal point. Contemporary Pichwai paintings, steeped in rich heritage, find homes in art galleries and adorn the walls of connoisseurs passionate about preserving India's traditional craftsmanship. Originating from the Rajasthan town of Nathdwara near Udaipur, this 400-year-old art form narrates the glory of Lord Krishna's life, notably his feat of lifting the Govardhan hill to shield the people of Vrindavan from Lord Indra's wrathful rains. Executing a Pichwai painting, whether traditional or modern, demands meticulous craftsmanship, with artists employing vibrant natural colors and intricate embellishments, ensuring each piece radiates timeless beauty and spiritual reverence.
