About the Artwork +
In Bhaskar Chitrakar's contemporary interpretation of the Kalighat painting style, a snake is depicted devouring a fish, capturing a moment of primal instinct and natural balance. The symbolism in this artwork reflects themes of life and death, predator and prey, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living beings in the cycle of existence. Against a vibrant backdrop, the intricate details of the snake's scales and the fish's form are meticulously rendered, drawing the viewer's gaze into the captivating scene.
Chitrakar's contemporary take on the Kalighat style offers a fresh perspective on traditional motifs, infusing them with modern relevance and artistic innovation. Through bold colors and dynamic compositions, he brings ancient narratives into the present, inviting viewers to ponder the deeper meanings behind the imagery. Kalighat art originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat temple in Kolkata, where it emerged as a popular form of visual expression among local artists and craftsmen. Artists would create vibrant compositions on paper using natural pigments and brushes, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, religious rituals, and everyday life. Through their art, Kalighat artists captured the essence of Bengali culture, reflecting the region's rich history and traditions while adapting to the changing times.
