About the Artwork +
This Chittara painting by Ishwar Chowda Naik vividly illustrates a scene from a temple chariot festival, known as Theru. The artwork features a grand temple chariot, central to South Indian temple processions, where idols of deities are carried through the streets during festivals. At the upper portion, a towering temple structure is depicted, intricately depicted with geometric patterns, circular forms, and symbolic motifs, embodying a regal and divine presence. At the same time, a central triangular figure suggests a deity or spiritual essence, drawing the viewer’s focus to the core of the composition.
The lower section of the painting portrays a vibrant procession, where tribal figures, rendered in a primitive style, are shown pulling the chariot with ropes. This communal effort highlights the integration of sacred and social elements, emphasizing the collective nature of the festival. Birds escorting the Maramma and Holeyamma goddesses further underscore the reverence and festive spirit of the event. Framed by a double border of alternating triangles and zigzags, the painting's lively depiction and rich colors capture the essence of Chittara art. This style, rooted in the traditional folk art of Karnataka, is characterized by its geometric precision, symmetrical balance, and symbolic representation of sacred and communal life, reflecting the deep cultural and religious significance of the festival.
