About the Artwork +
In Saraswati Kannan's Kurumba painting, the village comes alive with the rhythmic beats of tribal dance, reminiscent of the celebratory scenes often depicted in Warli art. Similar to Warli art, Kurumba paintings focus on communal activities and rituals, highlighting the interconnectedness of the tribe and their reverence for shared traditions. The fluidity of the dancers' gestures and the dynamic composition evoke a sense of unity and joy, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the spirit of the moment.
Nature plays a vital role in Kurumba art, serving as a backdrop that reflects the tribe's deep connection to the natural world. In Kannan's painting, the surrounding landscape teems with life, with intricate depictions of trees, birds, and animals woven into the fabric of the composition. These elements not only enhance the visual appeal of the artwork but also symbolize the Kurumba people's harmonious relationship with their environment.
Kurumba art originated as a form of visual storytelling among the Kurumba tribe, who inhabit the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, India. Using natural materials such as charcoal and plant-based pigments, Kurumba artists would create intricate paintings on walls and other surfaces, depicting scenes from daily life, mythology, and spiritual beliefs. This ancient practice served not only as a means of artistic expression but also as a way to preserve and transmit the tribe's cultural heritage from one generation to the next.
