About the Artwork +
This mesmerizing Mata ni Pachedi painting by Vasant Manubhai Chitara, titled "Turtle (Jogni Mata ni Pachedi)," is a stunning depiction of the sacred turtle, intricately crafted using natural colors on cloth. The turtle, a symbol of longevity, stability, and the sustainer of life, occupies the center of the composition. Its large, circular shell is adorned with complex, detailed patterns in gold and earthy tones, representing cosmic order and protection. At the heart of the shell lies a smaller circular motif, possibly symbolizing Jogni Mata or other divine figures, embedded within layers of intricate geometric designs that radiate outward like ripples, emphasizing the turtle’s role as a foundational force in mythology and the natural world. Surrounding the turtle there is a vibrant blue background, symbolizing the ocean, with delicate fish swimming gracefully, further reinforcing the connection between the turtle and the water element. The turtle’s head, legs, and tail are carefully detailed with symmetrical patterns, adding both dynamism and balance to the composition. The outer edges of the painting are framed with a rich, floral border, a hallmark of traditional Mata ni Pachedi art, that encloses the entire visual narrative. The artist’s masterful use of color, particularly the interplay between the gold, earthy tones of the turtle and the deep blue of the background, creates a harmonious and peaceful ambiance. This painting beautifully captures the symbolic essence of the turtle, offering a visual journey into the realms of mythology, nature, and spiritual belief, all while reflecting the rich heritage of Mata ni Pachedi artistry.
