About the Artwork +
This exquisite piece of leather puppetry, crafted by Rajeev Pulavar, depicts Vibhishana, a significant figure from the Indian epic *Ramayana*. As the noble brother of the demon king Ravana, Vibhishana is portrayed with both strength and compassion, reflecting his internal struggle between familial loyalty and moral righteousness. The puppet's face is carved with sharp features, its expression imbued with wisdom and a hint of sorrow, symbolic of his choice to stand against his own kin in favor of Dharma (righteousness). His attire, rendered in a rich green and gold patterned robe, stands out with intricate perforations and delicate white dots that form geometric designs, representing his royal lineage and high status. The puppet's dark skin contrasts with the lighter, more vibrant tones of his clothing, creating depth and drawing attention to his posture, which seems to convey both power and humility. On one hand, he holds a staff, a symbol of authority and protection, while his broad shoulders and solid stance reflect his warrior heritage. The detailed armbands and ornamentation on his body further enhance the character's regal appearance, while the craftsmanship highlights the balance between simplicity and complexity that defines traditional shadow puppetry. Vibhishana's depiction captures the essence of his internal conflict and ultimate redemption, a testament to the storytelling mastery Rajeev Pulavar brings to his leather puppetry, where light and shadow breathe life into mythological tales passed down through generations.
