About the Artwork +

In Manoj Tekam's traditional Baiga painting, a woman emerges as a central figure amidst a backdrop that intricately weaves together elements of nature. The significance of nature in Baiga art is prominently displayed as the woman is depicted in harmony with her surroundings, showcasing the deep interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. Every detail in the painting reflects this symbiotic relationship, from the woman's posture mirroring the flow of nearby rivers to the intricate patterns adorning her attire, reminiscent of the flora and fauna that surround her.
Tekam's attention to meticulous detail is evident in the intricate motifs and vibrant colors that bring the painting to life.

The ancient Baiga tribe is indigenous to central India. Many of them can be found in the Mandla district, near Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh. Throughout various phases of their life, Baiga women get tattoos on their head, arms, chest and legs, representing aspects of nature integral to the Baiga way of life and this very same culture is showcased in this artwork.

Many of them can be found in the Mandla district, near Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh. They live traditionally, in villages with mud huts and no electricity, completely untouched by modern development. They cook using primitive implements, cultivate and store their own rice, and brew potent toddy from the flowers of the sacred mahua tree.
