About the Artwork +
In Saraswati Kannan's Kurumba painting, a tranquil village scene unfolds as women gracefully carry pots and attend to their daily chores, reminiscent of the intricate simplicity found in Warli art. This richly detailed composition captures the essence of rural life, with each figure contributing to the narrative of communal harmony and shared responsibilities. Similar to Warli art, Kurumba paintings emphasize the interconnectedness between humans, nature, and the environment, portraying a symbiotic relationship where each element plays a vital role in sustaining village life.
Kurumba art originated from the Kurumba tribe, nestled in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, India. The process of creating Kurumba paintings typically involves using natural materials such as charcoal and plant-based pigments to craft intricate designs on surfaces like walls or canvas. Passed down through generations, Kurumba art serves as a visual testament to the tribe's cultural heritage and traditional way of life, preserving their stories and customs for future generations to cherish and celebrate.
