About the Artwork +

The Kashidkari embroidery work displayed here is a splendid example of the rich and intricate artistry originating from the Indian subcontinent. This particular piece showcases the meticulous craftsmanship and vibrant aesthetic characteristic of Kashidkari, also known as Kashida embroidery.

Kashidkari embroidery is renowned for its elaborate motifs that often draw inspiration from nature. In this piece, the design features an array of blooming flowers, delicate vines, and ornate leaves, all intricately stitched with precision. The use of vivid colors against the fabric background creates a striking contrast, bringing the design to life with a sense of movement and depth. Each stitch in this embroidery work reflects the artisan’s dedication and skill, with patterns that are carefully planned and executed to maintain symmetry and harmony. The embroidery techniques used in Kashidkari are varied, including satin stitches, chain stitches, and stem stitches, each contributing to the texture and richness of the final piece.

This Kashidkari embroidery is not just a decorative textile but a piece of cultural heritage, embodying centuries of tradition and the artistic expression of generations of craftsmen and women. It serves as a beautiful testament to the enduring legacy of Indian embroidery, where every thread tells a story of beauty, tradition, and meticulous artistry.

Her ancestral ties connect her to the Chohtan Tehsil of Barmer, Rajasthan, where she carries forward the legacy of Kashidakari.

Her journey into this intricate art form began under the tutelage of her mother, and she has dedicated over two decades to honing her skills. Her passion and commitment to Kashidakari have not gone unnoticed, as she was awarded the District-level prize in 2015 for her exceptional craftsmanship.

Devi has extended her expertise and generosity by imparting her knowledge to thousands of women in her village, working in collaboration with a non-governmental organization (NGO). This admirable initiative not only empowers women but also ensures the preservation and continuity of this traditional art form within her community.

Kashidakari

Kashidakari is the Persian name for needlework. Derived from this name, the Kashida, also known as Kasida, is one of the oldest forms of embroidery that originated in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Kashida work created by using thick, coloured threads and beads to create different attractive patterns. Most kashida motifs inspired by nature, such as vines, birds, leaves and flowers and is one of the defining aspects of this art form. Inspired by this kind of embroidery on textiles, each state or region across Pan India added their flair and distinctive stitch form to this artwork. One of these forms was embroidery on leather footwear, known as the Jutis. Rajasthan, in particular, was a hub where the making of these exquisite shoes first originated.
