This panel gathers work from two tribal traditions of central India. On the left, a bold black silhouette figure by Manoj Tekam represents the Gond style, a human form built entirely from the fine repetitive linework and geometric patterning that defines Gond art, where the body itself becomes a canvas for texture rather than realistic detail. Surrounding it are four Sohrai paintings by Manikchand Mahto: a coiled chameleon, a leaping cat, a pair of deer and clustered birds, each rendered in the earthy black-on-cream palette Sohrai artists mix from natural clay and ochre pigments.
Sohrai is a post-harvest mural tradition from the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, traditionally painted by tribal women directly onto mud walls using fingers, twigs, or cloth rather than brushes. Its animal motifs, chameleons, cats, deer, birds, carry associations with fertility and the natural cycles the harvest festival celebrates, and the deep ochre-and-cream contrast comes entirely from foraged earth pigments rather than manufactured paint.
Together, this panel places two distinct tribal vocabularies side by side, the dense linear patterning of Gond beside the earthy figuration of Sohrai, united by a shared root in rural, matrilineal painting traditions where the natural world is rendered with warmth, simplicity, and an unmistakably handmade touch.

No, we currently sell artworks unframed (unless explicitly mentioned otherwise) and do not provide framing services.

Returns and Replacements
