About the Artwork +
Zia composes herself as she notices discoloration on her breasts. This flush of colour is hard to ignore. She personifies the second step of SBE, and urges women to be mindful of changes in their bodies. Surrounded by a motley of saplings, Zia reminds you that the body often uses colours to convey important messages.
These are stories of real breast cancer survivors. Your purchase will help provide financial assistance for the treatment of underprivileged cancer patients. 100% of the proceeds will go to The Apollo Cancer Foundation (ACF). Read Dharini’s complete story here.

Zia
A flush of red
Canary yellow,
Cadmium orange,
Crimson red.
Zia immerses herself in colours,
As she turns an empty canvas into a sunset.
She’s in her studio that overlooks the beach.
Its stained glass windows gleam against sunlight.
She spends day after day in her studio,
Her brushstrokes create magic with colours.
Colours are the essence of her existence,
Her eyes can pick up even the faintest of tints.
For others, the ocean is just blue,
But Zia sees a spectrum of colours.
Turquoise, cerulean, azure and sapphire.
No colour has ever failed to delight her,
Except for a flush of red that she saw on her breast.
On a windy autumn morning, Zia stood,
In front of her full-length mirror, drying herself.
Her eyes trained to pick up every tone and hue,
Found a tinge of red on her right breast.
It seemed nothing, but Zia couldn’t ignore it.
So, she decided to get to know the colour more.
She glided her fingers up and down,
Over her right breast with her arm raised.
It wasn’t just a flush of red,
But she found a thick patch of skin on her breast.
Her face paled, and her breath quickened,
As she realized what it meant.
The world seemed colourless for a while,
But Zia couldn’t give up on her life.
Changing into a Prussian blue saree,
She decided to get the colours back in her life.
It has been months since.
The red hue of her right breast is gone.
Zia is thankful for her eyes,
That picked up early signs of her cancer.
She has gotten back to her studio,
To celebrate the colours of her life.
"Step2 – Use the flat of your fingers to examine the breast while in the shower, lying down and standing in front of a mirror."
