About the Artwork +
This exquisite Kalighat painting by Sonali Chitrakar beautifully portrays Goddess Durga as the central deity, her divine presence magnified through intricate detailing and symbolic elements.Kalighat painting, a traditional art form from 19th-century Bengal, is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and religious themes, often depicting Hindu deities with fluid brush strokes. Her face, the artwork's focal point, is adorned with expressive eyes, a gracefully arched nose, and a slight smile, embodying serenity and strength. The headdress is a masterpiece of storytelling, showcasing Goddess Durga and her ten forms, symbolizing her multifaceted power and divine energy. The iris of her eyes features Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya, her beloved sons, reinforcing her role as the nurturing mother. Lord Shiva is represented within her bindi, symbolizing her third eye, known as "Triyambake" a symbol of spiritual wisdom and inner knowledge, emphasizing their cosmic unity. Two attendants stand by her side, reflecting devotion and service to the goddess. The intricate ornamentation, including detailed jewelry and patterns on her attire, adds richness to the composition, while the gold and red hues highlight her celestial aura. The fluid brush strokes, characteristic of Kalighat style, gracefully outline her features, enhancing the expressive depth of the painting. The overall composition harmoniously blends devotion, mythology, and artistic brilliance, making this painting a mesmerizing representation of divine femininity and power in the Kalighat tradition.
