About the Artwork +
Tholu Bommalata, or Tholu painting, is a traditional form of leather puppetry from Andhra Pradesh, India, known for its vibrant colors, intricate details, and mythological themes. Kanday Anjannappa's depiction of Lord Vishnu in the Tholu style is a striking example of this ancient art form's richness and complexity.
In Anjannappa's painting, the central figure is Lord Vishnu, reclining on the serpent Shesha in the cosmic ocean. Vishnu, depicted in a serene blue tone symbolic of his divine nature, is shown with four hands carrying his iconic attributes. The posture signifies his role as the preserver in Hindu cosmology.
Surrounding Vishnu are a multitude of gods, goddesses, celestial beings, and saints, each depicted with animated expressions and bold forms that characterize Tholu painting. Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu's consort, is seated at his feet, symbolizing prosperity and divine grace. Brahma, born from Vishnu's belly button atop a lotus tendril, represents the process of creation, while Shiva, Narada Muni, and other deities and sages observe the cosmic episode with reverence.
The painting's vibrant color palette, dominated by shades of red enhance its visual impact and highlights the richness of the scene. These colors are not merely decorative but also carry symbolic significance in Hindu mythology, representing energy, auspiciousness, and the divine.
Anjannappa's Tholu painting of Lord Vishnu is not just a visual spectacle but also a profound narrative of creation and cosmic order as described in Hindu scriptures. Through meticulous detail and artistic skill, Anjannappa brings to life a scene that invites viewers into the mystical realm of Hindu mythology, where gods and mortals alike play their roles in the eternal cycle of existence.
