About the Artwork +
This wishful Madubhani artwork by Ambika Devi, portrays fishes in a flower pattern, wishing for prosperity and abundance in various aspects of life. It represents the desire for a fruitful and bountiful existence. It also portrays the peaceful existence of aquatic and territorial elements, signifying the interconnectedness of nature and highlighting the importance of depending on each other and cooperating with other animals in nature. Fishes in Madhubani painting symbolize fertility and vitality. The presence of fishes in a flower pattern symbolizes the abundance of fertility and growth of nature. While the dominant use of bold black ink and the sparing use of red is used to ward off evil and protect people, the light shades of naturally sourced yellow pigments signify abundant fertility and growth of nature. In the Hindu religion flowers are often used as offering to Gods and Goddesses and a sign of respect and worship by the devotee. The fishes in a flower pattern may also depict the artists reverence for the fish as fishes are worshipped by the people of Mithila as Lord Vishnu took the form of a Matsya (fish) avatar to save the Earth from a devastating flood. This painting also has the traditional double margins which is a characteristic of Madhubani paintings where often in the margins various geographical elements are painted. In this painting, flowers, and fishes the two seemingly simple but intricate elements that are the focus of this painting can be seen in its margins.
