About the Artwork +
This Madhubani painting of fishes by Ambika Devi, represents fishes in a circle of life which symbolled abundance of wealth, harmony and prosperity. The use of bright paints and pigments, bold strokes and complex geometric figures in this painting is a characteristic of Madhubani paintings, also known as Mithila paintings originating from Bihar and Nepal. Fishes in Madhubani art are a symbol of personal growth as they metamorphosize from eggs to fully formed creatures. Fishes, being a water creature also symbolize purification and harmony of nature. In Hindu mythology Lord Vishnu, in his Matsya (fish) avatar, saved the world from a massive flood. So painting fishes also represent divine protection and auspiciousness. Fishing is an important occupation for the people of Mithila, as they are surrounded by rivers and fertile plains, so this paintings represents how close the community is to nature and signifies their dependence on natural elements like fish and water. Primarily done by women, the Madhubani art, also serves to provide economic empowerment to women artists as they experiment with new mediums on which Madhubani art is painted, like fabric and ceramic.
