About the Artwork +

This Kavad narrates the story of Rama and Krishna, encompassing important events from their life. The top of the Kavad depicts the Sun god, an important deity for those in the region, below which are two dwarpalas, guarding the gates of the temple. Once open, the Kavad narrates th different scenes from the Hindu epics. The Kavad is a mobile story-telling device that sometimes serves as a temporary temple. It is created by combining the skills of carpentry, painting and narration. As separate professions and tribes, the carpenter is a suthar, an artist is a chitrakar, and the story teller is a bhat. The Kavad makers combine the work of the carpenter and artist, while the Kavadia Bhats do the narration. The Kavad is made only in a village called Bassi, in Chittorgarh District of Rajasthan.
