About the Artwork +
Witness the ethereal beauty of the divine as Goddess Ganga, the epitome of purity and life-giving waters, graces us with her presence in this exquisite Goddess Ganga Handpainted in Kalighat Style Patua Painting on paper. Created by the talented artist Hasir Chitrakar, this masterpiece captures the essence of an ancient art form that has its roots in the culturally rich city of Kolkata. The Kalighat Style Patua painting tradition dates back to the 19th century and originated around the famous Kalighat Kali Temple. With its vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, this art form narrates mythological stories and showcases the daily lives of ordinary people. In this artwork, the use of brilliant hues such as vermillion, cobalt blue, and golden yellow brings a striking contrast, infusing life and energy into the canvas. This painting depicts Goddess Ganga, the personification of the holy river that flows through the mystical land of India. She is beautifully seated on her Vahana, a mythical creature known as Makara, symbolizing the merging of aquatic and terrestrial worlds. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate patterns and motifs adorning the painting, such as the lotus flowers representing purity and spiritual enlightenment, and the flowing waves symbolizing the eternal flow of life.
