About the Artwork +
The Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar portrays a woman in a professional setting, seated at a table and chair equipped with modern objects like a laptop, mobile phone, and a cup of tea. She is depicted as a boss, confidently embodying her role in a predominantly male-dominated space. Her black shoes, which are typically associated with the "babus" (clerks or officials) in traditional Kalighat paintings, stand out prominently against her traditional attire of a saree and jewelry, complemented by her long braided hair.
This juxtaposition serves as a powerful commentary on contemporary women's evolving roles in society. By wearing the black shoes, she symbolically steps into a man's role, asserting her authority and breaking gender norms. The traditional elements of her attire juxtaposed with modern professional accessories highlight the blend of tradition and modernity, illustrating the seamless integration of women into professional spheres while maintaining their cultural identity. The painting underscores the progress of women in professional fields, emphasizing their capability to lead and excel. It reflects the shifting dynamics of gender roles, celebrating the empowerment and resilience of women as they navigate and conquer spaces historically dominated by men.
This series of artworks emphasising the intersection of technology and kalighat art is created in a collaboration between creative dignity and artist Uttam Chitrakar.
