About the Artwork +

In Poonam Katoch's Kangra painting from the Geeta Govinda series, a poetic scene unfolds as Krishna Ji tenderly applies alta to Radha Ji's feet. The composition captures a moment of intimacy, with Radha's sakhi playfully teasing her for adorning her feet with alta in the presence of the one whom everyone desires. This artwork is a splendid representation of Kangra painting, a distinctive form of Pahadi miniature art that traces its origins to the enchanting Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh.
The Kangra miniature art, showcased in this piece, carries the essence of the Pahadi culture, blending elegance and emotion seamlessly. The painting reflects a subtle influence of Mughal miniatures in its meticulous detailing and refined expressions of the characters.
Poonam Katoch employs a palette dominated by cool tones, creating a serene ambiance that complements the delicate narrative. The use of soothing blues and greens enhances the emotional depth of the scene, while also paying homage to the natural beauty of the Kangra region.
The intricacy of design is a hallmark of Kangra miniatures, and this painting is no exception. Radha Ji's attire and Krishna Ji's gesture are adorned with fine details, contributing to the overall harmony of the composition. The playful banter between Radha's sakhi and Radha herself is brought to life through nuanced expressions and gestures.
As part of the Geeta Govinda series, this Kangra painting not only captures a moment of divine romance but also reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region.

    Kangra Art

Amid the natural beauty of the Kangra valley, Pahari painting developed into an art of great charm and delicacy under the influence of its own early traditions as well as refined Guler and Mughal styles. In the late 18th Kangra became the most powerful hill state, under Raja Sansar Chand the Kangra art flourished. The most significant topic in contemporary paintings is still love—historical and mythical love stories are brilliantly depicted in paintings like Radha Krishna. The paintings are extremely detailed, revealing not just the main figures but also surroundings filled with carefully painted trees, flowers, and other kinds of life. They truly are poetry in their core.
