About the Artwork +

This captivating Kalighat painting by Sonali Chitrakar presents a striking depiction of a cat holding a fish in its mouth, embodying both playfulness and symbolism. Rendered in the bold and fluid strokes characteristic of the Kalighat style, the feline is painted in a vibrant shade of yellow, its body adorned with distinctive black markings that enhance its dramatic visual appeal. The cat's exaggerated, almond-shaped eyes, accentuated by dark, arched brows, exude an enigmatic and almost human-like expression, a hallmark of Kalighat artistry. The pointed ears, slender limbs, and delicately curved tail contribute to the feline’s graceful posture, as it sits poised, clutching its prize. The fish, painted in shades of silver and gray with intricate scale detailing and a vividly red tail fin, adds a dynamic contrast, drawing attention to the creature’s successful hunt. The muted beige background allows the subject to stand out with striking clarity, emphasizing the simplicity and elegance of the composition. The black border enclosing the image lends it a framed, sacred quality, reminiscent of traditional Kalighat scroll paintings. Beyond its depiction of a simple moment, this artwork serves as a potent metaphor, critiquing religious hypocrisy and societal flaws. The presence of cats, traditionally portrayed in Kalighat paintings as symbols of greed or cunning, reinforces these critical cultural themes. However, in this rendition, the cat appears more contemplative, almost reverent, as it gazes outward, fish in mouth, creating an evocative and beautifully composed visual narrative that blends folklore, aesthetics, and storytelling.
