About the Artwork +

This exquisite Thangka painting by Krishna Tashi Palmo depicts the sacred twenty-one forms of Green Tara, a revered female bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism known for her compassion, wisdom, and protective nature. At the center, the Green Tara is seated gracefully on a lotus throne, her vibrant green complexion symbolizing active compassion. Tara's hands are depicted in two special gestures known as mudras, where the right hand is in Vitarka mudra, a gesture of awareness and knowledge transmission, and the left in Varada mudra, representing compassion and generosity. Her right leg is slightly extended, ready to rise and assist those in need, embodying her role as the "Mother of Liberation." Surrounding her in radiant halos are the 21 emanations of Tara, each seated in a meditative posture on lotus thrones, floating amidst a celestial landscape of lush greenery, flowing clouds, and sacred floral motifs. These Taras manifest in various hues—red, white, yellow, and blue—each representing different aspects of protection, wisdom, and compassion. The intricate detailing, delicate brushwork, and harmonious blend of rich blues, warm golds, and vibrant greens reflect the traditional Tibetan Thangka artistry, imbued with spiritual symbolism. The painting is framed by a sleek striking red border, enhancing its visual depth. Every element, from the soft rolling hills to the auspicious clouds, contributes to a divine realm where Tara’s enlightened energy pervades. This masterpiece serves as a meditational aid, guiding devotees towards compassion, inner peace, and spiritual awakening while preserving the sacred heritage of Tibetan Buddhist art in its most refined form.

Krishna, a shining example of determination and resilience, has carved a unique path as one of the few women Thangka artists. Her journey in Thangka art is a testament to discipline and unwavering perseverance, echoing with the spirit of breaking down boundaries. Despite facing physical challenges, having been affected by polio in both legs, Krishna's indomitable spirit shines through with an ever-present smile. Her artistry transcends her physical limitations. Her dedication to her craft led her to the Tibetan traditional art school in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul Spiti district, where she honed her skills from 2006 to 2012. From a young age, Krishna dreamt of being an artist, and this dream propelled her forward, even when the odds seemed stacked against her. In a class of 350 students, where the prevailing belief was that women could not practice Thangka art, Krishna stood out as one of the four aspiring female artists. Yet, her love for art knows no bounds. Beyond pursuing her own artistic journey, Krishna generously shares her knowledge and passion by teaching children at a local NGO in her town. Her aspirations extend far beyond her personal success; she yearns to create an identity for herself and to transcend the boundaries of gender in the art world.
